Tis the season to be merry… and all too often sorry.

People are more generous this time of year than any other time, and criminals pray on this. They also count on the fact that people travel a lot around this time of year. As you go out to visit friends and family, you leave your belongings behind, either in your car or in your empty house. Security is a peace of mind.

If you value your property and you don’t have an alarm system, maybe it’s time to ask Santa for one. Best Buy and other electronic stores put on amazing deals. In some countries, the day after Christmas (Boxing Day) is the biggest shopping day of the year (same as the day after Thanksgiving Day in the US). Keep this in mind, if you buy your alarm (or any other gadget) early and see it go on sale, most stores will refund the difference if you bring in the receipt. If you bought it in a different store, be sure to bring in the advertisement as well.

Where else can you look? Best Buy, Wal-mart, and some other electronics stores offer great sales.. some of them are almost impossible to pass by. Some online stores also offer great deals as well, such as Amazon and eBay.

Happy shopping!

Ok so I was up late the other night… very late in fact. It was around 3am and I had my windows open because it was a particularly warm night. I heard some shouting from down the street but thought nothing about it because I live fairly close to a college and there are a number of student housing near me (late night parties, drinking, fighting, etc). So anyway, I finish up what I’m doing and I hear some kids running down the street. I looked out and saw two kids, in their early 20′s, hauling butt down the street (one of them was putting a backpack on while he was running). While they were running by, one of them looked up to my office window and stared right at me for about 3 seconds. I didn’t really think anything about it until I saw all the police cars about 5 minutes later. A million questions ran through my head. Should I have done something? Should I have yelled out at them? Run after them?

Anyway, I went out with my dog and went down the street to see what was going on and as it turns out, they had tried to break into a car but the owner (a woman) caught them. They got away and no one was hurt.. but that could have been very scary, and dangerous. There’s no saying what they would have done had they been cornered and felt they couldn’t get away without a fight.

So I spoke with the police and gave my description of the boys, and then I spoke with the owner of the car. It turns out, she had an older car alarm that was set to silent but would alert through her key chain. The kids were so scared by the owner coming out that they dropped most of their loot, which included several GPS’s, a dozen sunglasses, about a hundred CDs, and a few wallets. What a stash! Who knows what they had in the other backpack the kid took with him?!

I took my dog for a nice walk around the neighborhood and around a nearby school (figuring if I was in their shoes, I’d find a nice quiet backyard or corner of the school to hide out in) but neither I nor my dog could pick up the trail. I wasn’t concerned if I had found them because I’ve taken years of martial arts training and most people would choose to avoid confrontation with someone with a dog. (my dog doesn’t like people hiding and he’s pretty good at sniffing people out… that and he’s really good at picking up people’s emotions and intentions)

Anyway, that was just an interesting event in my neighborhood the other day… anyone have a story they want to share?

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Maybe it was subconscious karma when two suspects were arrested and charged with burglarizing a car after they accidentally called 911 during the incident Sunday afternoon. Police released the 911 call to WFTV on Tuesday afternoon (hear it). “You gotta break that SIM card. Take that SIM card outta there. They can trace it,” one of the suspects said during the call.

911 dispatchers listened while the two suspects, identified by police as 19-year-old Stefanie Vargas and 13-year-old Kristian Amezquita, discussed the difference between items that were worth taking and items that should be left behind as they rummaged through the vehicle. Neither Vargas nor Amezquita knew that Daytona Beach Police Department units were on their way to arrest them. Officers quickly moved into the area on Glenview Avenue and arrested the two suspects, who were in a white Chevy Malibu. Police said property believed to have been stolen was still in their possession. Vargas and Amezquita, both of Palm Coast, were each charged with one count of burglary of a conveyance. Amezquita was released to a parent, but Vargas was held on $5,000 bond.

Police Say Robert Frink Stole $50,000 From Car

POSTED: Monday, June 21, 2010

UPDATED: 11:33 am CDT June 21, 2010

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man was taken to the the Bexar County Jail, accused of taking thousands of dollars and running. Police said 39-year-old Robert Frink took the cash during an April car break-in at a Southwest side flea market. According to the affidavit, Frink knew the way that business operated and that the bag in the man’s car would be full of cash, totaling about $50,000 in cash and receipts. Police said the victim’s car was parked outside a flea market on Moursund Boulevard when it was burglarized. A witness who knew Frink later told police officers that he had seen Frink driving away from the scene. Police questioned him later and said he admitted to everything, though they said they could not recover the money, because Frink said he spent some of it and the rest was stolen from him. Frink faces a charge of theft.

By Nicole O’Reilly, Hamilton Spectator

Hamilton police have arrested a 42-year-old man who allegedly struck a man with a screwdriver after breaking into his car.

The 35-year-old victim was alerted to the theft when his car alarm activated around 5:30 a.m. yesterday. Police said the car was parked in the driveway of the victim’s London Street North home near Cannon Street.

The victim followed the suspect along London Street to Roxborough Street where he confronted him.

The victim felt a sharp pain in his back and then noticed the screwdriver, said Sergeant Terri-Lynn Collings.

A struggle ensued and the victim was also stuck in the face with the screwdriver. The weapon did not penetrate the skin and the victim received minor injuries.

Collings said the suspect fled.

Around 1 p.m. yesterday the suspect was spotted by a witness who saw the initial event. The suspect was arrested in the area of Ottawa Street and Cannon Street.

Police have charged the 42-year-old man of no fixed address with theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, assault with a weapon and possession of burglary tools.

The stolen electronics, including a GPS and Bluetooth device were not recovered.

Collings cautioned the public to be careful around suspects involved in break and enters.

She said the victim “is very lucky he didn’t suffer more serious injuries.”
